Day 177 & 178 Port Solerno to Fort Pierce FL. – 27 Miles

20150227_131138Dampness filled the air. The wet, muggy oxygen permeated my lungs as I tried my best to push forward in the rain. I just wanted to reach a place where I could recharge and recuperate. I needed a proper bath to soak away all that ailed me. However all that had to wait. I repeatedly looked out the trailer door to see if the rain had lifted. When I finally found an opportunity I darted. I ran from the fast food parking lot with a jacket and hat. My legs skillfully avoided puddles as I made my way towards Fort Pierce.

20150227_145139As I ran up the eastern side of Florida I was reminded of my first steps in this state. The vegetation and wildlife had not changed too much. I did remember more forest in the northwestern part but other than that, the Cypress trees continued. The road was straight but we didn’t reach our destination. Instead, we stopped as rain was expected to resume falling.

20150227_145146The rain fell through the evening and well into the next day. The trailer sat in a puddle two inches deep when we woke. I tasted humidity when I yawned. Cars looked more like boats navigating the streets. It seemed as if day 178 was washed out. The three of us pulled out reading material and read in silence through the morning. At least we weren’t worried about being towed. The dark lighting and humid air mixed a recipe for sleepiness. I hardly expected the rain to stop at around two.

20150227_170033I threw on my gear quickly so that I could hit the road before Mother Nature changed her fickle mind. Again I was on the road. My legs felt surprisingly strong. I made Fort Pierce in short time. We would take the rest of the day to fill water jugs and arrange dinner. We were fortunate to find a Pizza Hut that agreed to donate a large veggie pizza. Inshalla!
