Day 203 & 204 Hollywood to Charleston to Mt. Pleasant, SC – 25 Miles

IMG_2812I woke up to the scent of forest. My body felt great despite the heavy wear of the journey. The protein packed breakfast helped prep my muscles for more motion. The morning was spent talking to the folks at the RV Park. They were interested in our adventure and wanted to help us continue our mission. It was a good thing too. We were beginning to worry that we weren’t meeting our monetary goals for this trip.

IMG_2799After taking a quick stroll around the grounds, I hit the road to Charleston. It didn’t take long for the grass shoulders to transform into cement sidewalks. Once that happened, I picked up some momentum. I only slowed my stride when I found Crystal parked by a church. There she informed me that I had an interview scheduled with channel 4 news, the local ABC affiliate. My legs had been slowly losing motivation over the course of the rainy days but, with the sun out, and a pressing engagement, I found my motivation. We made it to the Battery in short time. The sea air rushed up my nostrils and into my lungs as I took in the rich historic area. As I strolled along the water I spotted Fort Sumter lingering in the distance. Images of the Civil War flashed in my mind.

20150325_125057It was a brief interview. Because we were in such a historic area, Crystal and I decided to take in some of the sights. Peppered throughout the affluent neighborhood were tour guides galore. Some of them had written books about the area’s history but I had been told that some of them created their own facts. Artistic license with history, interesting. As people heard about our undertaking, they tried to convince me to run in the annual bridge run. I never knew it drew close to a quarter of a million people to the city. I don’t know exactly how many people were running in it, but it explained why none of the hotels had rooms to donate. How did this trip get planned to hit every big event along the east coast? First it was bike week, then St. Paddy’s day, to round it off we hit a huge race and I wasn’t even running in it. It didn’t matter, the city was spectacular

IMG_2828The following day I continued through the city and beyond. I ran across a piece of amazing architectural design. I wasn’t sure if it was the bridge everyone was to run over but it had cables that came down from a peak like rays of light. It seemed to be a popular route for exercise enthusiasts. I enjoyed it too. After that I ran into suburbia. At a crosswalk I discovered a turtle on the concrete. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. How did he get into the city? It was perplexing and it made me think about the old fable.

20150326_121547I agreed to meet Crystal at a mall that had a movie theater. I wanted to watch a flick because we had been holding free movie tickets for a long time. Since it was supposed to be a day off anyway, it was alright to take a second shortened day. The movie didn’t take up much time but the sweets I consumed had worked its way into my blood. I had to get rid of the energy so we decided I should continue running. We made it to the outside of Mount Pleasant with no place to stay. The parking lot where we ended up had some rowdy hillbilly kids that were fixing their trucks, yelling vulgar language at each other, and riding around in a shopping cart. When Crystal got fed up with the noise, she walked past them with a cold stare. They left shortly after and we had a quiet night. I however had no shower. 20150326_112214
