People often ask me, “What does running have to do with reading?” I usually tell them that a healthy body and a healthy mind go hand in hand. But, really there is so much more to it. There are layers which I can’t possibly explain in a daily blog post. Both activities have healing and strengthening properties which lead to increased confidence and increased happiness. Both can transport you to a higher level of consiousness. Both are a means of escaping the pressures of everyday life. Both activities can help you attain certain goals. I want to share this gift with kids everywhere. After all, I will be counting on them tomorrow.

Day 60 Just outside of Mclean to the Oklahoma border (Texola) 28 miles

So I started my day with an egg mcmuffin meal from McDonalds. Splashed all over the weather channel was news about the tornados in Iowa. Now the power of suggestion is a powerful thing and seeing the devastating power of mother nature can put paranoia into the calmest of people. I looked out the window and saw the trees swaying. There was a haze everywhere that looked like dust. I asked myself is this the day I get swept to Oz? Well my name isn’t Dorothy, I don’t have a dog named Toto, and I wasn’t in Kansas.

My mission for the day was to cross the border and get to Oklahoma. There I knew I would be OK. I know I’ve seen my share of dead animals on the roads over the past couple months but today really took the cake. The scent didn’t linger by the animals though...

Day 59 Jericho to Exit 148 24 miles

Someone told me Mercury was in retrograde. I generally don’t believe in that kind of stuff but… Last night I threw my running clothes into a sink basin with my buddy’s ipod nano still in the pocket. I swear I checked both pockets before I soaked them. To say I’m bummed out is an understatement. I recently learned how to load my CD’s onto the thing so I not only had my music on there but also my Portuguese lessons. I’m lucky I’ve got all the disks with me here on the road. Now the problem is stopping somewhere to buy a new piece of electrical equipment.
