Day 43 Rio Puerco to Albuquerque 17 miles

3/24/2011

Chicago might be the windy city but for sure New Mexico is the windy state. Again I ran into blustery winds. Dust and debris obscured my sight while the wind and I fought yet again. I thought we had a truce but like Moammar khadafi, nature chose not to honor our truce. I passed another correctional facility and I began to ask myself, “Just how many prisons do they have in this state?” A sign close by read, “Don’t pick up hitchhikers. Prison close by” I felt bad reading the sign. What if someone had car trouble? What if a person had paid his debt to society but had no body on the outside to welcome him back?

This morning, my mom took the car in for an oil change. While she was out, I received a text message from Anna who continues to make miracles happen back at headquarters. Juggling various responsibilities, which include class, she still managed to get in contact the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque. I’ve had the pleasure of staying at the Hyatt Regency in Kuaii. It was one of the most memorable vacations of my life so, I was excited by the news. I must say, the team back home is indispensable.

After passing a dead coyote and a lone cow grazing on dried grass, I scaled a hill. When I reached the top a beautiful sight was revealed. CITY! There was civilization waiting in front of me. Everywhere I looked there were homes, stores, and activity. The wind did try to keep me from the city but failed. I’m happy I’ll be in the neighborhood for a couple of days.
