Day 147 Newark DE to Chester PA 24 miles

7/20/2011

I woke up from a great rest. Downstairs soothing music played on the stereo while fruit, yogurt, and granola greeted me. I could tell this was going to be a good day. The scent of the hot breakfast reinforced the sentiment. I had a roasted red pepper, seasoned potatoes, toast with homemade jam, and two perfectly fried eggs. Breakfast really does set the tone for your entire day.

After breakfast it was time to say good bye to the Blue Hen bed and breakfast. Amy and Don sent me on my way with well wishes and a jar of her homemade strawberry jam. I started on the road and my thoughts played in rewind mode. I replayed crucial parts of this spiritual expedition. I asked myself many questions. I wanted to know if there was anything I could have done differently. I asked my body if it would take on this challenge again. Did I achieve my goals?

One might think this challenge is draining but, I feel completely opposite. I feel that my entire experience has filled me. It has filled me with new ideas, renewed resolve, and it has filled my heart with love. I discovered and rediscovered an America that is nothing short of great.

As we grow older, sometimes we put away that which is magical and replace it with this idea of reality. Suddenly, I found myself crossing another border. I was back in Pennsylvania and reality was back. The town I was running through had many abandoned buildings. Across from one of the buildings I spotted a tiny statue honoring veterans. The solitary scene struck me and my idealism. I thought to myself, the way to truly honor those that have given their lives for this country is to make this country strong again. What did they fight for if not for ideals? If we do not fulfill our potential as a country and as individuals we dishonor their memory. I don’t know about you, but I am very grateful to have been born in this country. I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve been given. I have been downright blessed to enjoy the freedoms of America.

We are arguably the greatest civilization to date. We were founded on ideas and ideals. If we do not hold ourselves to the highest standards we might slip from greatness.

My day ended quietly and I have no internet connection this evening. It’s probably a good thing. I will rest. The run isn’t over just yet.
