Week 1 New York to Illinois

8/3/2011

The discipline hasn’t completely gone out the window. It has tapered down a little bit though. I ran five miles on Sunday, nine miles on Tuesday and worked on my upperbody everyday. The legs are begining to feel completely normal but the rest of my body is sore. I guess my body needs to compensate for my lack of running.

While I ran across America, often times I wished I had more time to spend with the people. At times I just wanted a few extra minutes to get to know someone better. I’m obviously driving back home and lucky for me, I’ve made a few friends along the way. I’ve spent the past two days with my friend Mike Evans and his wife Judy in the town of Bloomington. I met him in his museum in Atlanta, Illinois a couple months back and I’ve had the pleasure of staying in touch with him.

Today we started the morning by going to an antique car collectors club. I met a great group of guys with the pretty cool interest of collecting and restoring antique cars. My interest in this hobby has increased over the course of my run. As I passed rusted old machines full of potential on the road, I often imagined how fun it would be to cruise down the sunset strip in an old hot rod. How fun would that be? I’m sure it would turn plenty of heads.

Julius a gentleman that lives a couple minutes away from Mike had an entire fleet in his home. He even had a couple of old school gangster looking cars. Cadillacs, Fords, Mercurys, and a whole slew of other cars filled his garage. I had a great time basking in the grandure of his collection.

From Julius’ place, we headed to Dave’s house. Dave’s place, which is located in Danvers, Illinois, happens to be an old electric train station that has been restored and turned into a home. How fantastic is that?

The fellas were all so warm and friendly and I’m reminded why Illinois was my favorite state to run. Just when I thought my adventure was over, it rolls on.
