Day 2. Redondo Beach to Newport Beach – 35 miles

Goran from Palos Verdes InnSome nights you get luxury, some nights you go budget. Last night I we had accommodations which were not as fancy as our first night but they were still very comfy. The sheets were clean, the icebox was cold, and the front desk was nice. The most important thing was that the Jacuzzi was hot and powerful. I sat in the hot tub for a while relaxing my muscles. It was a ritual I developed on my last adventure. I never turned down a bubbling cauldron.

Mamma ChiaI started my morning with a high dose of protein. Two Mamma Chia drinks, corn flakes with ensure mixed with milk and protein powder. I judged that it would be critical due to the high volume day. I knew I was a tad weaker than three years ago. But, I’m glad I didn’t over-train. I figured my
body would take a beating over the next year and a half anyway.

Industrial chuckThe weather channel reported hurricanes approaching both coasts so the outlook was gloomy and cold. I didn’t even know California had hurricanes and right after northern Cali got hit by a 6.0 earthquake. Crazyness I say. The greyish overcast sky provided a prelude to my day. The first city I passed, Whilmington was all grey. The air from the industry even smelled grey. And as I ran, a grey ghetto bird stalked me as if I were prey. Why must the oil refineries look so grim and lifeless? The scenery only picked up after I was out of Long Beach. That must have been about 20 miles into my run.

Chuck taggingThe beaches were familiar territory to me but the waves were huge. They were fifteen feet high and not a soul swam in the waters to challenge them. It must have been the hurricane warnings. It had been a while since I had run in the 30’s. So as I approached the home stretch I found my legs to be heavier than I remember. Ask me again next week and it will be a different story though. It takes twenty one days to create a habit. Bring on day 3.
