Day 37 Pearce to Wilcox AZ. – 24 miles

10/1/2014

20141001_114604I left the Goldminer RV resort after a chilly evening. I had a deep and restful sleep in the trailer even though the first sign of the new season had surfaced. We stayed cozy with ample blankets and a hot chocolate. The early days of this journey it was easy to wake up. The scorching sun provided a loud wake up call every morning. Today I found that I didn’t even peek out of the blankets until 7:45. Even after that I still wanted to stay under wraps.

20141001_114604The day’s run was rather simple. I almost ran past my one and only turn but fortunately I figured that Railroad Road meant the road next to the tracks. It was dirt with no signs. Taking all lessons, up to this point, into account. Crystal and I agreed to use two different roads. I would run along the tracks and she would use the reliable interstate 10.

IMG_3269I ran past sandy dunes while along the tracks. I heard eagles screaming at their little ones as they taught them to fly. It all passed very quickly as my kicks tread gently over tiny stones. The pace for the day was steady the entire time. Not breakneck but not slow either. I had hit Wilcox in plenty of time for lunch.

IMG_3275What we found in town was nothing short of a little treasure. At first glance La Unica might just look like a little tortilleria. La Unica had both ambiance and great food. The furnishings were all carved and designed wood. It had a patio area as well for those that like to dine in the fresh air. It turned out to be a restaurant that had been open four generations. I figured I had to have my fill of Mexican food because after Texas we would be changing flavors. This place made their own tortillas. Sometimes I judge a book by its cover and sometimes I judge a Mexican restaurant by its chips and salsa. It has worked for me more often than not. The chips were made from their own tortillas and had a light flakey quality. The salsa was a mild flavor but made from tangy tomatoes. My combination platter consisted of a cheese enchilada, tostada, beans and rice. The enchilada and tostada had a very light crunch and neither were too oily or salty. It is very difficult to find that perfect taste. The fresh crisp lettuce mixed with some diced tomatoes topped the tostada. I devoured the entire plate and it was the perfect end to the day’s run. To be honest, I knew I was going to enjoy the place before I stepped in because I could smell the food from across the street. IMG_3279
