Where does the time go? When we focus on our goals the distractions get tuned out. As I run I try to take note of the things in my immediate surroundings. The sounds of the Arizona desert are very different from New Mexico. Before the sounds of various creatures tickled my ears. Here the creatures are a less vocal. Instead, I hear trains roaring and screeching often. Of course it may be due to the fact that I’ve had to take a route close by the railroads. The Butterfield stage coach had a route practically parallel to these iron horses. They had set up trading posts every twenty miles. It is because of those settlers that I am able to have this adventure.
The sights have subtly changed as well. The rattle snakes have been replaced by a less poisonous breed. The lizards like Rango have been replaced with horned toad lizards. The saguaro cacti are now Yucca. The Yucca happens to be the state flower. There are a few similar crops but a couple new items were added to my smell inventory. I passed farms with red onion, one with red peppers, and a great pumpkin patch that would make Charlie brown freak out. The body felt great. I attribute that to a combination of maintenance with my CEP gear and nutrition (runners’ fuel provided by Mamma Chia). As for my main meals, I don’t remember my lunch but Crystal made bean and rice burritos for dinner. This provided me with plenty of protein for recovery and plenty of carbohydrates for tomorrow.
As for obstacles, I’m thankful that it wasn’t a day with many impediments. Just a somewhat straight road. On to Las Cruces. We have some kids to inspire there.
