Day 42 Laguna to Rio Puerco 30 miles

3/23/2011

The weather was beautiful. The scenery was awesome. The roads were difficult. The rocks out of Laguna were beautiful. I was surprised to see that the old route 66 ran through some sacred Indian land. I got stopped by a lady telling me I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of the rocks. I thought she was nuts until I got to the end of the strip and read the sign for myself. It was during the first five mile stretch. The road then ended up crossing over the freeway. This side of the freeway was completely open but it felt as if the main road and I were being forced further and further apart. It would have to connect again though. I was sure of it. I continued on and to my surprise not a soul passed me. I found myself alone looking at an open horizon when suddenly ahead on the road was a herd of cattle. The cows and the calfs stampeded off as they saw me approaching. When they felt they were safe they turned and stared at me like I was a strange alien. The bulls I encountered just after the women and children were not so timid. They didn’t run away. In fact, they looked like they wanted to charge at me. I’m lucky they didn’t because there really was no place for me to hide.

I finally ended up somewhat close to the interstate again but there were two paths and I had to make a choice. The first would have me backtracking for a little bit. The second, well, it seemed to meet the freeway. I chose the one that seemed to meet the freeway. Until now I don’t know if I chose correctly. The reason being, one mile in I hit a fence that told me I couldn’t trespass on reservation property. I went through the fence and of course it was shorter. But, there was still another fence I had to go under to get myself out. When I did get out, I was still thirteen or fourteen miles from my destination point. I put one foot in front of the other and did the mileage.
