aSometimes taking the road less travelled means taking a road that has already been travelled by many. As the world progresses and technology moves ahead, we often leave the old behind. Personally I love old stuff. I love old cars, old music, old gadgets, and now I’ve fallen in love with the old route 66. Over the course of this journey I’ve found myself running alone on a road that was once America’s highway. I’ve imagined the journeys and the characters the road has seen.
Today was one of my more solitary running days. I ran lightly because it was the first day of hot weather. In fact, I sunburned one of my arms. I’m not sure how the left arm avoided being cooked. I encountered a few people at breakfast that had seen me running along the freeway over the past couple of days but I expected that to be pretty much it for my human contact for the day. I was mistaken. I reached a stop along the freeway called Newkirk. I almost called it a town but a couple of houses and a gas station a town does not make. Oh yes, I forget, there is a United States Postal Office connected to the gas station. There I sent a book to my good friend in the Philippines.
While sending out the letter, I decided that I would have lunch under a tree on a picnic bench. My mom joined me and a short time later so did two brothers named Aarend and Maarten travelling from Holland. They were on a tour of the western states and they seemed to be having a blast. I am so happy people still enjoy coming to see our country. I noticed they took a picture under a route 66 sign. I thought to myself there must have been a time when adventurers crossed paths at that location, made friends and ate popsicles that cost a nickle. Good to meet you guys!
