Day 76 Claremore to Foyil 5 miles

4/26/2011

Wow. The kids today were all great. We started the day at St. Francis Childrens Hospital at ten in the morning. Last night J.C. rejoined me for the run and even though his plane arrived late last night we were up ready to give away books and spend time with some kids. The Hospital was very colorful and the food smelled pretty good. It was just the way a childrens hospital should be set up. We went room to room, floor to floor. The entire time I just thought to myself, “I hope the kids will enjoy my present”. Kids have a keen sense about things and I trust their judgement.

After spending an hour visiting with the kids at St. Francis, we headed over to Sandy Springs Children’s Home. Once again, I encountered facilities which were immaculate and wonderful. They had a couple of pool tables, a huge gym, and a screening room for movies. It just so happened that Fox news channel 23 in Tulsa came just in time to do a piece on the great reading run. The kids put me to work today. They were inquisitive, they read with me, they asked me to sign books, and we ran together. Some of them even got on camera. They’ll probably enjoy seeing themselves on the news. The story should be on fox23.com. It was a surprisingly long piece.

So, the day doesn’t end there. I still had mileage. We got JC reacquainted with the routine. We began our run at Claremore and ran for five miles to Foyil. Something just wasn’t sitting right with me though. I looked behind us and I saw black storm clouds moving in quickly. My instincts told me to call it the day. The moment we got into the vehicle, rain started to fall. A few minutes later, hail the size of quarters began pelting the car. We headed towards Big Cabin Horse Motel in the awful weather. Like I said yesterday though, everything ends. Just like that the turmoil subsided and I was with a wonderful couple enjoying southern hospitality. Sandy and James Duke have this amazing ranch with history oozing from it’s pores. They have a horse that is the grandson of Secretariat, a bunch of great animals, and the coziest rooms. I’m even using their computer to get this out right now. So, I’ll put up more pictures of the kids and the adventure tomorrow. I don’t want to wear out my welcome so excuse the hasty commentary today.
