Day 120 Joliet to Bridgeview 29 miles

6/12/2011

Texting messages while driving is against the law for a reason. It’s so you don’t hit people running. You got that. I’m talking to my friends as well; In fact especially to my friends. Next time you hear that ping, either wait until you are parked or pull over to the side if it’s that important. Really, I don’t want to be roadkill. OK?! So please try to think of me and everything that I’m putting myself through before picking up the mobile phone while driving.

I’m glad I got that off my chest. Now it’s time for a report on this quiet Sunday’s solo adventure. I started late yet again. I was fine with it though. I had some good company as I chatted a little bit with my new friend Janice and I thought I’d be doing short mileage. I figured on doing maybe twenty four miles for the day. It turned out I did a little extra.

It took a few miles of strolling through Joliet before I hit the I&M Canal Trail. My pace went from slow to snail like. The reason being was my desire to take pictures of just about everything today. The rusty old factories of the past and the torn down cement spoke to me. Being just outside of Chicago I imagined European immigrants working their tails of in the exact places I chose to stand. I thought about the book I gave away a couple days ago and how it applies to our modern times. Oh yes, reading the classic can teach us about today. It is true that those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.

Did you know that the book “The Jungle” had a direct hand in the formation of the FDA? I’m sure you might have read the book “Food Inc.” or seen the documentary “Super Size Me”. Well, This book is like their grand daddy. I think every generation must have their greedy villans. Without them champions and heros couldn’t exist.

The day’s run was quiet for the most part. I saw a deer and I almost got hit by someone sending text messages while driving but that’s about it.

When I reached the home of Terri, Don, J.D., and Amy Baron, I felt comfortable right away. They are animal lovers and have all kinds of pets. To drive home my point about literacy, Terri’s son J.D. wants to graduate from high school in three years and go into politics while her daughter Amy wants to study medicine. They have many books in their home and the kids are avid readers. It’s no coincidence these kids want to do big things. Reading books helps put those ideas into the mind.

My words today might indicate that I’m in a fiesty mood. Perhaps it’s because I will hit a major milestone tomorrow. I guess it’s starting to hit me; where I’ve come from and where I am today. The world will really help us do whatever it is we want. As long as what we want is pure and good.
