Bed and Breakfast is all about the breakfast. I woke up this morning to a dining room full of guests and a breakfast fit for a king. If I didn’t write about Cheryl’s baked French toast I’d be skipping out on an integral part of the day. She began preparing the dish the prior evening and baked it in the morning. It was topped with a blueberry syrup which gave me enough energy to power me through my tough morning.
People are constantly asking me how many calories I consume daily. Now, I don’t count them but, I know it ranges from seven to eight thousand. So the best tasting items are perfect for my high intensity days. I compliment every breakfast with a large protein shake and juice. I keep candy on me in case I need a quick energy boost on the road. Of course I am only able to eat like this while on this quest. When it’s all over I’m sure I will be back to single servings and healthy items.
After breakfast I was interviewed by Jason Croxal. Cheryl had told him about my mission because he is as passionate about literacy as me. I didn’t realize I’d have an audience but I felt pretty comfy with everyone. (thanks for being there- Don, Cheryl, Chuck, Bob, Sheila, Berdita, Leanne, Dakota, Melani, Brendan and Robert) Press, interviews, and my events with the kids feel as natural to me as running these days.
Speaking of running I didn’t get on the road till about one o’clock. It seems that no matter how hard I try, I am unable to hit the road early. And while I treasure the all important sleep, it seems that after taking care of my other responsibilities, I just can’t get enough of it. Having Jason, Mimi, Alex, and Nick filming me out on the open road was good company. They captured me taking on some gnarly hills and we got a great shot of the crossing of the Ohio/West Virginia State line. I had to run over a long bridge with wooden floor planks. You could actually see the Ohio river below. It was a rush.
Afterwards we took a break for lunch at Mimi’s parent’s house (Mary and Al). I powered up on grilled cheese and angel hair pasta and looked at double rainbows in the sky. You know that’s good luck. I think the food and the scenery provided me with just enough lift to carry me over the final hill into Pennsylvania. I ended after crossing another state line then headed back to Calcutta bed and breakfast for an interview with Nancy from the register. I think I’ll say it every time, crossing state borders without the help of a machine is the best rush ever. To do it twice in a day puts me over the moon.
After all was said and done, it was time for a little relaxation with a drink and some good conversation. Remember, the people are what it’s all about. Time to watch the fireflies dance around and light the night. It’s a treat we don’t get living in the city.
