On my day of rest I ran for seven miles to break in my new set of shoes. A fresh pair always puts a spring in my step. At the beginning the Nike fingertraps seemed heavy and clunky. It was that thinking that made me think my legs were giving way. Or it might have been that I had gotten too much sleep. Either way, once I got into my stride, the body felt great and I was ready to let loose. I just had to remember that it was a rest day and I was only giving the sneakers a little road time.
Dinner was a veggie pizza provided by Mama Rosa’s. It was a medium sized with thick crust. The mushrooms had a very meaty and filling taste. I was surprised at how good it tasted. But then again, often times, small towns have the best food.
We took our left over slices back to the Hampton Inn – Lordsburg. I took the time to relax in another hot bath and just enjoy doing nothing. I found myself rummaging through the trailer for reading material. It seemed we had given away all my books to lighten our load and my kindle was back in California. It was a good time to catch up on a little busy work. Only the bed was so comfortable I fell into a long deep sleep.
Day 42 arrived much too quickly. I let Crystal sleep in because getting good rest in comfortable places is like having a gourmet meal after eating canned food for a few days. We have learned to appreciate every second of luxury. Up to this point we have had our fair share of great beds mixed with nights of roughing it. I will say this though. Even roughing it in the trailer has been easier than some of the nights I spent on the first run.
The day was spent pretty close to the freeway but not on the freeway. It was more train track and frontage road action. I had to cross the freeway a couple times and that meant finding big holes in barbed wire fences to climb through or under. That was the extent of the hardship though. On this day the main highlight was crossing the continental divide. It separates the flow of water into Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. People think it is a hard climb but you don’t really feel much. The elevation was 4585 feet. I of course train at around 6000 so the higher elevation had little effect.
