Early start but where was the sun? I stumbled outside at 7:00 AM and it felt like night. I was due to meet Ms. Heidi Roman’s fourth grade class around 8:10 so I splashed some water on my face and started to get dressed. I was mentally ready because my sleep consisted of dreams about what I would say to the kids. With each event I have taken notes on how to make my impact stronger. I have watched what gets to the kids and what puts them to sleep. Of course there is always room for improvement and I’m sure I will forever be a student.
I walked into a room of eager young minds but I could sense a little bit of shyness. Of course that only lasted for a minute. The moment the kids saw the Papa Dido’s stickers I had their attention. Kids love stickers. I was able to get them involved for the duration of the class. They were in the story with me while I read out loud right up until the moment I had to leave them wanting more.
I would have loved to go back to sleep after hanging out with the kids but it was not to be. Every minute was filled with work. When I finished my social media work and touching up my blog I was ready for a break. The only problem was that it was already noon time which vacationers know as check out time. We loved our stay at the Thunderbird and we were very reluctant to leave but the clock was ticking.
We returned to Pueblo Market and received a donation from Joseph Welsh. For the first time on this journey we were able to stock up on healthy fresh fruit and veggies without worrying about our budget. It was like gaining a little piece of mind. Our final pitstop, before my feet returned to the asphalt, was back to Memo’s Café. Crystal and I wanted more of what we ate the previous day.
So in the end, I got on the road at about three o’clock. How does my start time end up later even when I wake up at the crack of dawn? My start times often dictate the pace of each day. I most certainly run faster when I’m racing the sun or when I’m running away from something. Both factors played a part on day 59. Just after the first mile the remnants of a disheveled black and white furred skunk had its entrails splattered on the side of the road. The pungent odor could not be escaped. Of course I had to run towards it but without a doubt I sprinted away from it.
The cool wind gusted as I ran through Paisano pass. It was my first day on the journey running with a sweatshirt. My perspiration was minimal due to the chill. I think the strong headwinds slowed my time a bit. While going through the pass, I searched for these blond goats with horns which I had heard about. My eyes never stopped searching but it was not to be on this day. However, I did notice another landscape change. There were plenty of bushy green trees. The trunks were thin but the branches stretched wide. I even ran past an inactive volcano. It was a caldera. Once I hit that mark only a couple miles remained until I hit the Ramada Hotel in Alpine.
