The sound of a downpour seeped into my ear as I slept. My consciousness cut in and out like a radio with little reception. Perhaps I was a little worried the rain would continue into the day. When breakfast time rolled around the rain had lightened to a drizzle. I filled my stomach and retreated to the warm bed with many pillows. The schedule for the day looked to be in doubt. So before drifting back to sleep I called the front desk to ask for a late check out. They extended the stay by half an hour.
The precipitation lifted the moment I started to run. It was extremely cold at the time. On the plus side, the day’s distance looked to be a little over twenty miles. Originally we had planned to run fourteen but, after receiving word from Geronimo RV resort, we extended the mileage. I trudged through wet grass and rocky roads as I ran to Fort Walton for lunch. The entire time, the threat of another downpour loomed. I made sure to wrap my cell phone in a plastic bag and place it deep in my hydration backpack.
When I ran toward Destin/Miramar, the beauty of the white sand dunes made me rub my eyes. The beach was so white it looked as if it were covered in snow. To my left, I saw pine trees growing out of the sand. This stretch of beauty remained untouched until I hit the bridge to Destin. Then suddenly a tourist attraction magically sprang out of the sand. A lighted marina area housed restaurants and hotels galore. Both sides of the street were filled with tourist attractions. It was a seafood lover’s paradise.
Crystal and I called it the day at twenty-two miles because the blanket of dark clouds obscured my vision. Of course my body felt fine but I was excited to relax at the Geronimo RV resort. It was located only two blocks from the beach and I got cold very quickly after I stopped stepping. A hot shower and the heater would be the perfect end to a great day. When we arrived at the park, Tom greeted us with a smile and kindness. We chatted for a bit and took a tour of the grounds. The grounds were impressive but nothing beat the running heater. The timing was perfect as gusty winds decided to move in.
