Day 194 Riceboro to Savannah GA. – 30 Miles

20150315_145342The chirping bird ensemble signaled the onset of spring. The day was warm and I was determined to reach a spot close to the Savannah airport. My mom was returning to California. The previous days had taught me to cover up while running. My body itched in several places from the various bites. I slipped on my usual long CEP compression socks but I ran with my cap, sunglasses, and a cloth wrapped around my face to avoid swallowing the insects. I felt like a comic book character but I wasn’t sure if the getup looked more like the hero or the villain.

Every step closer to Savannah brought about more St. Patrick’s Day advertisements. They reminded us that we didn’t have lodging in the city. Apparently Savannah has one of the biggest St. Paddy’s celebrations in the United States...

Day 193 Darien to Riceboro GA. – 27 Miles

20150314_183212The luxury of giant beds had been a distant memory until my stay at the Open Gates Bed and Breakfast. After a bath filled with bubbles, healing salts, and sports alcohol, I was ready for comfort. My head sank into the soft pillows while the bed cradled my limp body. It rendered me unconscious until the dark hours of the night when my hunger began to beckon. Not wanting to wake anyone I laid there and told myself I wasn’t hungry.

Day 192 Waverly to Darien GA. – 30 Miles

20150314_102436I bundled up to escape the cool breeze. The toll of all the thirty mile days had worked a number on my body. I believe I slept motionless until 9:30 the next morning. I had originally wanted to hit the road early but that plan was shot. I glanced around the trailer and suggested we wash all our clothes. After the hot sweaty days mixed with the intense downpour, my damp clothes had the trailer smelling like a high school locker room. Crystal agreed to meet me in the town of Brunswick and get started on the laundry. But first, she wanted to finish her job of organizing our box of receipts.
