Day 141 & 142 Gulf Hammock to Inglis to Homosassa FL. – 39 Miles

IMG_1020The days have started to blend together. I tried my best to keep my days straight but, there are days that pass without a spot to post my progress. It is a slippery slope when things aren’t maintained. In an instant the steady road becomes an uphill climb. I’m lucky I like hill work and that things never slipped beyond reach.

IMG_1003Gulf Hammock had no internet, no store, and not electricity. It would have been a complete stretch of wilderness had it not been for the stoplight and post office. Surprisingly a couple people stopped momentarily at the abandoned market’s parking lot. One lady got out of her car and started calling for her cat. Day 139 & 140 Cross City to Chiefland to Gulf Hammock – 44 Miles

20150117_114420As the people in the northern part of the United States battled freezing cold, warm beams of light tickled my face. On the 139th day of my journey, I was greeted with spinach quiche, biscuits, pinapple, and juice. The start of the day signaled good fortune. Katelyn interviewed me and Crystal over breakfast. We recounted the ups and downs of the journey in between delicious bites of food. When all was finished, we set out to snap a few photos for the publication. In between photos, I met a sweet couple that was very familiar with Cross City and its history. Bill and Sybil had witnessed the changes of the town over the years and they mentioned the place had swanky parties back in the day. They were so glad Beverly and Ed purchased the property to restore its glory.

Day 138 Salem to Cross City FL. -22 Miles

20150116_114738After a night filled with mishaps I just wanted to run. I needed the comfort of taking one simple step after another. I poked my head out of the trailer to find a glowing sun. There was no trace of the previous day’s rain. The cloud filled skies and the obstacles of the prior day had been wiped clean. Crystal whipped up a cheese and scrambled egg sandwich just before dropping me to the spot I left off.

20150116_130624The prior evening I had discovered a tree root that looked like wooden stalactites and stalagmites. They decorated the inside of a bar next to the trailer’s parking spot. The bartender working told me the wooden decorations were called cypress knees and that only the Seminole Indians were allowed to cut them...
