Day 25 Relax, Day 26 Chandler to Casa Grande – 38 miles

IMG_2868It’s funny how important a childhood best friend can be. The impact they have on our lives is great immeasurable. Yesterday I had the pleasure of hanging out with my best friend from middle school. Even after many years removed, it the good times are still vivid and fresh in my mind. Conscious of my tight budget, Roger did not expect an extravagant dinner or much fanfare. He was happy to just order pizza, hang with me and Crystal, and watch cable television at the Chandler Hilton. So again the purpose of this journey is about the people. Literacy and fitness are still the main objectives but on an adventure of such magnitude how could it not be about connecting.

Day 24. Scottsdale to Chandler – 20 miles

IMG_2816The sun came back strong but there was a hint of fall in the air. The itinerary for the day included speaking to a group of kids at Coronado High School about the importance of literacy. I had spent the previous night thinking about how to approach these kids. With the cross country team it was easy because I could fall back on the topic of running. With this class I would need to bring the message home and I would have to make it interesting. I felt very comfortable with these kids as they connected with what I was saying and doing. I have a bunch of new Facebook friends now and hopefully they will follow and be inspired by this journey.

Day 23 weather induced rest – no movement

IMG_2792The evening of the 22nd ended with some good Thai food and some great company. My friend Z picked up Crystal and me from the Honey House bed and breakfast and took us to a restaurant called Thaiger. A few years had passed since I last saw any of my Arizona friends. Where did the time go? I guess I decided to plan this trip to connect with old faces and meet many new ones. Sometimes old friends are the only link to your past. Nostalgia is a way of looking at ones evolution. It is replaying the chain of events that have molded and shaped our being. It is funny the people, places and things that linger in our memory.
