Day 10. Ocotillo to El Centro CA. 27 miles

Running against trainAgain the wind whipped in the night. But on this evening the rocking of the trailer was gentle and soothing. Perhaps it was because we were secure in the parking lot of the Red Feather Café. We bought a veggie burger and a couple of beverages in exchange for hooking up our trailer. The sweet hum of the air conditioner was like a dose of soporific tranquilizer.

Chuck on trainBecause of the raging sun, of the past few days, our team smartened up. We decided to stop being roasted broke the day into early morning running and early evening running. The mid day respite was surprisingly therapeutic. We covered sixteen miles in the morning and left a light eleven for the evening. Our savior on this day was the Vacation Inn in El Centro...

Day 9. Agua Caliente to Ocotillo CA. 26 miles

tiredWarm whipping winds bullied our fifth wheel trailer as we attempted to sleep. While Crystal and my mother were able to get some shut eye, the desert wind blew through the window and onto my face, keeping me from my precious sleep. Just as my consciousness started to drift I was jolted back into our world by the menacing sun. It was only seven AM.

Cep gearThere were no deviating routes for this run. It was just a solitary road which seemed to lead to nowhere. Crystal and my mother were often several miles ahead of me but the run was mostly a conversation between me and nature. The scenery was all desert. There was not a trace of a scent in the air. The only moisture in the arid land was my perspiration, and even that seemed to disappear within seconds...

Day 8 Julian to Agua Caliente, California – 27 miles

eggEd and Dawn Glass the laid back and smiling proprietors presented me with a protein packed treat for the day’s run. A baked egg soufflĂ© with veggie sausage links filled my tummy before I hit the road. At breakfast we had the pleasure of meeting several couples staying at the Bed and Breakfast with us and one couple, Melanie and Greg, invited Papa Didos to do and event in their town of Clairmont CA. We said we would love to put on an event there and they gave us a generous donation. They were runners as well so I think the Great Reading run spoke to them.
