Day 12 On the road again to Fort Leonard Wood Missouri

Sunday morning arrived which meant it was a day for departure. But first, Mike and Judy took me and mama out to a Sunday morning buffet. The thing I love about these smaller towns is that everyone knows everyone else. It’s really something special. It seems like everyone is related as well. It’s not uncommon to spot your cousin when you are out eating.

Skies were clear and the corn was tall. Saying good-bye is tough but, I never think in terms of good-bye. I always think until we meet again. I will surely return to visit Mike and Judy. They were a riot. As were their pets Fritz and Odie.

On the road, the memories came flooding back. Even though I ran that stretch of route 66 a couple months ago, each days’ details were crystal clear...

Day 11 The Journey Home (stopover in Bloomington)

Saturday Mike took me and my mom to the antique car show being held at the David Davis mansion in Bloomington. We showed up in his 1938 Buick (I’ll expect a call if I get the year of the car wrong). It was a treat for two reasons. First, I got to hang out with all the fellas from the car club and see all their antique cars. Second, I got to take in a little piece of history. David Davis is the person responsible for nominating Abraham Lincoln for President. On the grounds, hosts and hostesses were dressed in garb from the early ninteen hundreds. I don’t know how the ladies handled the heat back then because those dresses had them covered from head to toe. I guess global warming hadn’t set in yet. Although I’m sure it was still hot as hades in the summer.

Day 10 The Journey Home Bloomington, IL.

The corn that was knee high two months ago is now all grown up. It’s way over my head and about ready to be harvested. Heading home, I know I’ll be seeing many people doing the same things in the same places. The familiar is a source of comfort like a special blanket. We are creatures of habit. As for me, I’m a strange creature. My habits have changed. I most definitely feel like a different person. In some ways I have grown. I feel a tight connection with this planet and it’s creatures. If you’ve followed the journey, I guess its obvious.

I’m having the best time taking a breather. I’m regrouping before I take on the next challenge. During this time, I’ve caught up on some much deserved sleep and I’m feeding my outrageous appetite...
