Day 63 Marathon to Picnic Area 21 miles

IMG_4048The festivities of Halloween kept me up a little later than I had planned. A hot bonfire, in the center of the patio at the Burro, toasted my body while Noble and Alaine introduced us to some of the locals. Crystal made some new friends by giving away some of our stickers. We moved from conversation to conversation until Crystal reminded me I still had to run the next day. And just like that we were strolling back to Eve’s Garden B&B under the moon and stars. The king size bed in the Saphire room was so comfortable. It cradled me like a baby. The sheets were the softest we had slept on yet. With the tiny heater providing us warmth, we were out within minutes.

Day 62 Alpine to Marathon TX. – 16 Miles

IMG_4009The extra rest in Alpine worked wonders on my body. We were sad that we were unable to say good bye to our wonderful host Tushar. He prepared us another breakfast packed with nutrients and we chatted a little bit but the chores associated with running a business beckoned. We stepped out to a dark cloudy sky while he tended to the installation of a new kitchen. The weather report gave precipitation a 60% chance. Crystal gave it a higher percentage. We discussed our options and we decided to visit Front Street Books on their main street. We had met Jean the prior day at the Rotary club meeting. She was a graceful, mature woman with an air of someone well read. It must have come from having a book store. The importance of literacy is definitely not lost on such an individual.

Day 61 Alpine TX. Rest Day 0 miles

IMG_3955Doctors always tell patients to rest. It is the key to recovery. The body repairs itself during nourishing sleep. I can testify to the healing power of sleep. After every rest day I’ve had on this trip my body has rewarded me with strong performance. It is nice when the body isn’t aching.
Crystal and I woke up eager to have another meal prepared by Tushar. The days when we eat canned goods in the middle of nowhere encourage our appreciation of the slow cooked meal. The value of nutrition is a major emphasis in our routine. While we read our food labels and make sure we are providing our bodies with the right vitamins, the body still reacts better to freshly prepared food.
