Day 35 Pinta Rd. to Querino Rd. 23 miles

3/16 2011

Today’s dogs never got close to me. Ha ha ha. I got a jump on the morning but, I ended up having a late day. What happened was that I stopped at mile five for a little snack. My hunger was out of control today. While at the Subway at the Navajo rest area, a highway patrol officer pulled in. I didn’t want him to see me take off running towards the interstate so I thought I’d wait it out. I didn’t realize that he was on his break and planned to be there for a while. My muscles were starting to cool down and I was itching to get back to the run. After I downehed an extra thirt-two ounces of fluid he finally left. I headed out right behind him figuring he wouldn’t be driving backwards. I want to make sure it’s clear that I do try to look for the side roads. When the small roads exist I do take them. Although it must be said that when those roads come to an end I am left with no other option than wiggling my way through barbed wire to get back on the freeway. Compounded with the tumbleweeds that are usually piled up against the fence, it is quite the task.

I felt thankful for some desolate side roads. It left me with free running time. But, all things come to an end and after a while it was duck under barbed wire and run on the freeway. The inevitable finally happened when I set foot on I 40. Around mile thirteen, the highway patrol that I thought I had evaded pulled into the middle section between the eastbound and westbound freeway. He flagged me down and I had to run into the center section as well. Surprisingly after explaining my mission he said I was doing a good thing, wished me well, and told me to be careful. I guess I was paranoid for nothing. The rest of the run went quickly and smoothly. I continued alongside the interstate facing traffic. For the final part of the run I noticed so many New Mexico license plates. I looked at my environment and yes, the scenery had changed once again. Tomorrow a new time zone and another milestone.
