Day 59 Jericho to Exit 148 24 miles

4/10/2011

Someone told me Mercury was in retrograde. I generally don’t believe in that kind of stuff but… Last night I threw my running clothes into a sink basin with my buddy’s ipod nano still in the pocket. I swear I checked both pockets before I soaked them. To say I’m bummed out is an understatement. I recently learned how to load my CD’s onto the thing so I not only had my music on there but also my Portuguese lessons. I’m lucky I’ve got all the disks with me here on the road. Now the problem is stopping somewhere to buy a new piece of electrical equipment.

The day started off with a couple hours of extra sleep. I think my body needed it. Plus the pillows at the Holiday Inn Express in Shamrock rocked!! They were super hospitable and they had great cinnamon rolls for breakfast. It’s been a while since I had a day off and I think my body wanted me to give it a break. I rejected the notion of taking the entire day off but I did allow myself to catch a few more winks.

When I finally hit the road, I felt good but, I was facing mid day heat. I ran from Jericho to the nicest rest area I have ever seen. Now I’ve travelled a lot in my lifetime and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a nice rest area. The place had wifi, marble walls and floors, presentations on Texas, tornado shelter, and an attendant.

I didn’t stay at the stop for very long and I decided to continue on. I found myself wishing I had the ipod around Alanreed which was six miles from the rest area. I also found myself running on semi sticky tar. No one said this journey was going to be easy. Several miles out of Alanreed my mom had found a shady spot under a big tree on the side of the road. I thought I’d sit and chill for a bit. Somehow I ended up catching a few more winks. I think it was the combination of cool shade, a warm breeze, and my body’s need for a break. I woke up and realized I was just a couple miles away from the steakhouse from the night before. Yes I am a vegetarian but I really loved the veggies they served. That’s the funny thing about good steakhouses. They always serve good vegetables as well.

The staff was especially sweet and I love the Texas accent of our waitress Amy. The place served generous portions for a great price. It’s the only thing happening in the town. It was eerie running through the town after dinner and finding no activity and no sign of life. On top of the creepy feel, a haze had descended and the wind was kicking. I have never been in a Tornado before so I was a bit worried. It wasn’t a tornado though. I found the weather kind of refreshing and I was feeling like running. So I did for a bit. Even my mom found the weather invigorating. We finished off the day with a picture of the sunset and fresh legs.
