Day 61 Texola to Sayer Oklahoma 25 miles

4/11/2011

People often ask me, “What does running have to do with reading?” I usually tell them that a healthy body and a healthy mind go hand in hand. But, really there is so much more to it. There are layers which I can’t possibly explain in a daily blog post. Both activities have healing and strengthening properties which lead to increased confidence and increased happiness. Both can transport you to a higher level of consiousness. Both are a means of escaping the pressures of everyday life. Both activities can help you attain certain goals. I want to share this gift with kids everywhere. After all, I will be counting on them tomorrow.

The sleep was excellent. I made breakfast a quick affair and jumped into a hot bath before getting on the road. It seems like I’ve got to soak my bones twice a day. Morning to get things moving and night to wind down. Started off at the Oklahoma/Texas border where I left off and made a new running friend within minutes. I called him Old Yeller because he was kind of like the dog in the old Disney movie. They sure did make some great movies over the years. If you have kids try to find this one and watch it with them. Just don’t cry! This hound dog was great. I think he’s like a hunting dog because he tracked down all kinds of critters. And he pointed. Yeah, the whole one paw up thing. At first he had quite the bark but we became fast friends and he went running with me. He must have kept up for about seven miles before deciding to seek out food at an old gas station.

With my running mate gone, I began to look towards Sayer Oklahoma. On the way I passed Kamp Katcha winK. Does anyone else find the name a little spooky?? Hey I’m game for camping out there but if I see any burning crosses or guys in white sheets, I’m out. Route 66 sure is interesting. I ended up running along side some tracks on old pavement with weeds were sprouting from the cracks. It was heaven for me to run. I felt shielded by trees lining both sides of the old road. So much of what I’ve seen on this route is like history. It’s American history. For me, it feels like I’m discovering an ancient civilization. Seeing this stuff everyday does not grow old.

I come from a time before the internet existed. On this journey, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to find something lost. But, I am rediscovering flavors from my childhood and it makes me nostalgic. I remember how simple things made me happy. When I read and run with the kids, they seem happy. They smile and they laugh. They play. I do hope they can savor these childhood moments.
