Day 104 St. Clair to Eureka Mo. 26 miles

5/27/2011

Hello sunshine! Please stay a while. I think everyone here is a bit tired of the dreary weather.

Today was so pleasant I chose to take my time and bask in the nice weather. I ran the rolling hills yet again but today I enjoyed every minute of it. I guess I know they are coming to an end. Like I’ve said before, every state has their own unique characteristics. They have unique smells, one of a kind landscapes, and priceless personalities. I feel blessed to experience each place intimately. I’ve had the opportunity to absorb the tiniest details of the states I have passed. The best part is that it’s not over.

Today while running, I literally stopped to smell the flowers. I spotted a cart with a rainbow of colors and decided to start snapping some pictures. I hardly realized I was capturing a little piece of history. I met the Engelharts and they run the little roadside stand of flowers. Behind the stand and shop is the farm where fresh produce is grown. They have such a wonderful variety of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. It made me miss the garden I used to tend. The reason is they had a plant that I used to cultivate as well. This little roadside business has been in operation even before route 66 ran through there.

The business has been passed to Harry and his wife and it seems like they put lots of love into their plants. You can always tell when plants recieve love. I personally like the all natural stuff over the genetically modified things big business sells us. I guess that’s another facet of this trip. I’ve experienced many special things which might otherwise get dwarfed by the franchise machine. I felt lucky that Harry and Donna took the time to chat with me. In the big cities many people don’t do that anymore. It’s really a shame. While chatting with Harry and Donna for a while, cars began to pile up. I figured they still had a business to run so I said my good byes and went on my way. I passed a few large caves on the last stretch as well as some ducks outside of a prison. (I just hope the ducks are careful because the food in the prison might not be very tasty.) Before I knew it, I was facing the roller coasters of six flags in Eureka. The wonderful Holiday Inn that is putting me up for the night is right next to it. Marvelous!
