Day 10. Ocotillo to El Centro CA. 27 miles

9/3/2014

Running against trainAgain the wind whipped in the night. But on this evening the rocking of the trailer was gentle and soothing. Perhaps it was because we were secure in the parking lot of the Red Feather Café. We bought a veggie burger and a couple of beverages in exchange for hooking up our trailer. The sweet hum of the air conditioner was like a dose of soporific tranquilizer.

Chuck on trainBecause of the raging sun, of the past few days, our team smartened up. We decided to stop being roasted broke the day into early morning running and early evening running. The mid day respite was surprisingly therapeutic. We covered sixteen miles in the morning and left a light eleven for the evening. Our savior on this day was the Vacation Inn in El Centro. The provided us with a huge bedroom, ample parking (even for the fifth wheel), and beverages for the evening. The room was big and the curtains blocked out all light. It was perfect for a deep restful sleep. Nona the sweet manager reminded me of actress Dianne Wiest. She said they usually only gave two complimentary breakfasts per room but she made an exception because, “We can’t forget mom.”

Bandit meWhile the running and reaching the destinations has been fun, we have discovered some areas in which we are in need. We need help with someone calling local press ahead of time and we need a person to be a liaison for upcoming events. Please let us know if you or someone you know could help us out.
