Day 11. El Centro to the middle of nowhere past Holtville – 25 miles

9/4/2014

Busted bridgeWith a revised gameplan I took to the streets of El Centro at five AM. My obscured view was aided by starlight and my mini flashlight. Neither lit my path much. My lungs and legs felt fantastic though. The streets of the town provided ample lighting. It was four miles into my run, on the outskirts of town, that I began running blind.

dragonflyWhen the first breaks of light began to color the sky I began to hit a full stride. The occasional semi truck would scare me silly and blow me back a few feet but other than that the morning run was great. I noticed that as I ran my shadow seemed to be chasing me. Funny, we always seem to be running from something. We called the morning run at seven thirty in the morning so that we could enjoy out complimentary breakfast from the Vacation Inn. I had a breakfast burrito which was made up of eggs and potatoes. The tortilla was what made the breakfast good though. It was the kind of tortilla that was light and it had been gently heated in the pan.

With a very late check out, we were able to wait out the heat and pick back up on the road at five PM. I slept most of the hours in between because just about two weeks have passed without a rest day. When we picked back up, I found myself surrounded by grass farms. Surprisingly the grass of my surrounding had been replaced by bales of hay while I slept. The smell of the freshly cut grass was a welcome change to the smell of motor oil and fast food cooking in the city. I ran a couple of miles at a time stopping randomly to snap a photo or talk to a random animal. As the sun was about to drop, I noticed my shadow was very long and I was now chasing it. Hmmm, we go from running from things to chasing them. hay
