Warm whipping winds bullied our fifth wheel trailer as we attempted to sleep. While Crystal and my mother were able to get some shut eye, the desert wind blew through the window and onto my face, keeping me from my precious sleep. Just as my consciousness started to drift I was jolted back into our world by the menacing sun. It was only seven AM.
There were no deviating routes for this run. It was just a solitary road which seemed to lead to nowhere. Crystal and my mother were often several miles ahead of me but the run was mostly a conversation between me and nature. The scenery was all desert. There was not a trace of a scent in the air. The only moisture in the arid land was my perspiration, and even that seemed to disappear within seconds. I ran gently through the lonely roads imagining the mountains were sleeping dinosaurs. I imagined how the lands were once underwater. I thought a lot about the power of patience and persistence when I saw canyons and crevices cut by running water. The different colored layers each represented thousands and thousands of years.
Crystal and my mom had gone ahead and found a place to plug the trailer for the night. Crystal came to support me on the open road without the trailer hitched. After filming a video she had me run ahead of her. Winding through the mountains I ran a couple miles then started wondering when she would catch up. After five miles and not a whisper or a peep I knew something was amiss. Just as I was about to reach the Yuha Desert Cutoff a guy in a silver Nissan Pickup named John pulled up behind me. At first I thought the sound of the vehicle was Crystal. Apparently John had helped her out of a soft shoulder and she was right behind. It was a relief to hear because I wasn’t sure if the border station at the Yuha Desert Cutoff would have hauled me off.
