Day 43 Rio Puerco to Albuquerque 17 miles

Chicago might be the windy city but for sure New Mexico is the windy state. Again I ran into blustery winds. Dust and debris obscured my sight while the wind and I fought yet again. I thought we had a truce but like Moammar khadafi, nature chose not to honor our truce. I passed another correctional facility and I began to ask myself, “Just how many prisons do they have in this state?” A sign close by read, “Don’t pick up hitchhikers. Prison close by” I felt bad reading the sign. What if someone had car trouble? What if a person had paid his debt to society but had no body on the outside to welcome him back?

Day 42 Laguna to Rio Puerco 30 miles

The weather was beautiful. The scenery was awesome. The roads were difficult. The rocks out of Laguna were beautiful. I was surprised to see that the old route 66 ran through some sacred Indian land. I got stopped by a lady telling me I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of the rocks. I thought she was nuts until I got to the end of the strip and read the sign for myself. It was during the first five mile stretch. The road then ended up crossing over the freeway. This side of the freeway was completely open but it felt as if the main road and I were being forced further and further apart. It would have to connect again though. I was sure of it. Day 41 Grants to Laguna New Mexico 29 miles

I’m sure Sheldon Adleson doesn’t own the Sands in Grants. If he does then the recession is worse than I thought. The folks there were nice but, there were a few areas which they could have improved on. The first room they put me in had an open packet of shampoo lingering in the shower. I was willing to overlook the shampoo packet but one thing I love is soaking in a hot tub after a tough day. The tub didn’t drain properly. The manager ended up exchanging our room. The bathtub in the new room worked but now the toilet needed attention. I had to lift the lid and manually pull the chain. I was too tired to complain.

I woke up to dark clouds and falling snowflakes. This morning’s breakfast menu included powdered donuts and powdered donuts. They also had a little bit of juice...
